ONAWA, Iowa -- Dwight H. Schroder, 84, of Onawa died Monday, June 13, 2005, at Creighton University Hospital in Omaha.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Chuck Layton officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur, Neb., with military rites conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Dwight was born March 26, 1921, in Decatur, Neb., the son of R. Harold and Mayme (Ponton) Schroder. Along with his brothers and sisters, he was raised in the family farm. He attended Decatur Public Schools and graduated from Decatur High School in 1938. He engaged in farming and carried the mail out of the Walthill, Neb. area until joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. While in the service, he was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, running LST boats in the Pacific Theater.

He married Anna Belle Hyden of Prestonberg, Ky., on Sept. 15, 1943. Two children were born to this union, Carol Anne and Phillip Charles. He purchased the family farm from his parents and farmed until 1971. The couple owned and operated the Schroder Cafe in Decatur until 1977. Along with the cafe, he owned and operated the Mobil Filling Station in Decatur with his son, Phillip, until his retirement in 1982. Anne passed away April 2, 1982.

He loved farming and working with the public. Family and friends were important along with being a good neighbor to many. He gave a helping hand along with a smile and a chuckle. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading western novels. He was proud of his service to his country during World War II, but most of all, he was proud of his family.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Decatur and received his 60 year pin in 2002. He belonged to the American Legion Post 215 for 58 years and served on the city council of the village of Decatur.

Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter and her husband, Carol and Tom Miller of San Dimas, Calif.; a son and his wife, Phillip and Marilyn Schroder of Onawa; a grandson, Aaron Schroder of Seattle, Wash.; three step-grandsons, Chad Heistand of Dunlap, Iowa, Jason Miller of Walnut, Calif., and Derrick Miller and his wife, Yolanda, of Walnut, Calif.; a step-granddaughter, Stacie Harmon of Electra, Texas; six great-step-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Marilyn and Jack Meyers of Phoenix, Ariz.; a special friend, Emily Moser and her family of Onawa.

In addition to his wife, Anne, he was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Neal; and a sister, Darlene Bush.
