Last Rites At Ute Sunday For Mrs. Mary Barnes, 73

Mary Ann Smith, daughter of David and Ruth Ann Smith, was born Nov 17, 1877 near Blakesburg, Wapello county. Iowa, and departed this life at the home at a daughter, Mrs. Walter Nagel, near Whiting July 27, 1951 at the age of 73 years, 8 months and l0 days. She was united in marriage to Minor Barnes at Ottumwa, Iowa, May 31, 1895. To this union were born 13 children

Surviving her are the husband, five sons, Clarence. Chester, Oscar and Dale of Mapleton and Herbert of Essex, six daughters, Mrs. Gale Dahl of Ute, Mrs. Henry Nelson of Soldier Mrs. Orle Scoles of Shambaugh, Mrs. Emory Tadlock of Sioux City, Mrs. Wallace Olson of Mapleton and Mrs. Walter Nagel of Whiting. One son and a daughter preceded their mother in death.

She also leaves 31 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one brother, Eli Smith of Unionville, Iowa, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She united with the Christian church at the age of 16 years and remained a faithful member through life.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Barnes lived at Blakesburg for about four years, then moved to Davis County Iowa, and farmed near Unionville until the spring of 1917. They moved with their family to Monona county, settling on farm near Ute where they farmed until the spring of 1942. Then, they moved to Ute where they make their home until June 3 when they went to make their home with daughter, Mrs. Nagel, at Whiting.

Mrs. Barnes had a stroke July 10, 1912, and had been bed ridden nine years. She was a devoted wife and mother and had a smile for all those who knew her.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church at Ute Sunday afternoon, July 29, 1951, Rev. Peter Jensen officiating. Burial was in St Clair cemetery at Ute.

Relatives and friends besides the immediate family, who attended the funeral services were Mr and Mrs. Charles Barnes, Mr and Mrs. Harold Barnes, Carl Barnes and Mrs. Esther Smith, all of Des Moines. Eli Smith and son, Alvia, and Mr and Mrs. Nick Herrington, of Unionville, Iowa.
