CASTANA, Iowa | Clark E. Smith, 67, of Castana died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa, with the Revs. Dennis Burns and Harvey Hansen officiating.

Clark Edward Smith was born on June 14, 1946, in Sioux City, the son of Paul and Caryl (Zediker) Smith. He graduated from Mapleton (Iowa) High School in 1964. Clark served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., and the Philippines until his honorable discharge in 1968. Clark attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Clark and Julie Christiansen were united in marriage on March 29, 1969. Two sons were born to this union, Eric and Pete. On Aug. 29, 1987, Clark and Julie were in a terrible car accident. Julie died of her injuries, and Clark was paralyzed from the chest down. Even though Clark went through these tragic events, he still enjoyed life to the fullest and had a pleasant personality and was liked by all who knew him.

Clark and Lisa (Larson) Koenigs were united in marriage in January 1990. They were later divorced. He worked in Cherokee and Dension, Iowa, for packing plants, and also drove over-the-road truck for Mau Trucking based out of Ida Grove, Iowa. Clark also worked in the office at Casino Omaha in Onawa.

He loved motorsports, everything from NASCAR, motorcycles, and drag racing. Clark was a member of Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Survivors include his two sons, Eric (Adria) Smith of Pilot Rock, Ore., and Pete Smith of Castana; three grandchildren, Zack Stai, Ciarra, and Cameron Smith, all of Pilot Rock; his mother, Caryl Smith of Onawa; brother, John (Dee) Smith of Chesterfield, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Christiansen of Springfield, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Smith; father, Paul Smith; and father-in-law, Robert Christiansen.

Memorial services were 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa with Pastor Dennis Burns and Pastor Harvey Hansen officiating. Music selections were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” with Darren Goslar as soloist and Deb Lauritsen as organist.

Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
