Onawa Democrat, Onawa, (Monona), Iowa, 26 Mar 1987:

MRS. MARGARET M. MATHIASEN

Margaret M. Nielsen Mathiasen departed from this life in the Elmwood Nursing Home in Onawa, Iowa, on March 13, 1987, after a long illness. Death came at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 12 days.

She was born near Turn, Iowa, July 31st, 1896, the youngest child of Jens and Christine (Thomsen) Nielsen who had immigrated from Denmark and who engaged in farming in the Turin area. She married Jens C. Albert Mathiasen March 22, 1919, at Onawa. The couple lived at Onawa the last 67 years.

During her lifetime Margaret was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational of Onawa, Plymouth Circle of the church, and David McNeill Post 129 American Legion Auxiliary.

Before her illness, she had many interests and had been active in the Home Department of the Women’s Club, a member of a Birthday Club, enjoyed a weekly Bible Study with friends for many years, and entered food and clothing items in the County Fair, winning many ribbons.

She was a partner in a good marriage, a loving wife, and she and Albert would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this month. She was a mother, a friend and a neighbor. Her family will miss her. While she is with you, she is taken for granted. When she is gone, there is a void you can never span, but she leaves behind a beacon of light to guide you to a safe landing. We thank God for her life.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, Of Onawa; a daughter, Mrs. Odell (Virginia M.) Johnson, of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, Vernon A. Mathiasen of Walnut Creek, Calif.; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren and several nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, 1987, at the U. C. C. Congregational, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Stoll officiating. The organist was Mrs. Jack Jordan and the vocalist, Mrs. Fred Gibson, sang “How Great Thou Art”.

Casket bearers were Floyd Dausel, Wilbur Phipps, George King, Harold Hausman, Viggo Dausel and Roger McCandless.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.

Memorials have been established in her name with the UCC Congregational and the Onawa Library.
