HILDA M. SMITH

Hilda M. Smith, 90, Climbing Hill, Iowa, died March 18, 1987, at Matney’s Colonial Manor in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

She was born April 22, 1896, to Broder Peter and Metta (Funderman) Boysen in Morgan Township near Schleswig, Iowa. In 1920, she married Earl Hargens. After his death, she married Wesley J. Smith on April 22, 1926, in Sioux City. The couple owned and operated Smith Grocery in Climbing Hill. Mr. Smith died November 19, 1937, in Climbing Hill. She served as postmaster at Climbing Hill from 1937 until retiring in 1965.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill and the Climbing Hill Garden Club.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Geraldine) Jacobson of Austin, Minn.; and Mrs. E. J. (Shirley) Berends of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sons, Orlan Hargens of Lincoln, Nebr.; Warren Smith of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; and Darrell Smith of Sioux City; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Erma Cooley of Sioux City; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; three step-great grandsons and three step-great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one brother and four sisters.

Services were held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 1987, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Climbing Hill, Iowa, with Rev. W. A. Resner officiating. Mrs. Alwayne Meyer was the organist and accompanied the congregation in singing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” and “The Lord’s My Shepherd”.

Bearers were Tom Jacobson, Scott Jacobson, Jim Berends, Dennis Rush, Douglas D. Rush and Dale Rush.

Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa, with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.
