TURIN, Iowa -- William N. Hathaway Jr., 85, of Turin died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Turin, with the Rev. Chuck Layton officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

William Newton Hathaway was born Oct. 23, 1919, in Turin, the son of William N. and Ada (Graybill) Hathaway. He was raised in the Turin area and attended Arcola Country School.

He married E. Jean Larson on April 5, 1945, in Sloan, Iowa. The couple have spent their entire married life on the same farm in rural Turin, where he was a lifelong farmer.

He enjoyed gardening and raising laying hens and found great joy in sharing the eggs and garden produce with his family, neighbors and many friends. He was also known for planting fruit trees, leaving his legacy an abundance of trees and their fruits for family and friends to enjoy.

He was an active member of United Methodist Church and a 4-H leader for 27 years.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Turin; his children, Yvette Hathaway and her friend, John Lantz of Charter Oak, Iowa, Elaine Nichols of Rodney, Iowa, Henry and his wife, Sherry of Leigh, Neb., Denise and her husband, Steve Bartel of Castana, Iowa, and Leland and his wife, Karen of Turin; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Margaret and Bob Maule of Turin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, William Newton Hathaway III and Michael Lee Hathaway; a son-in-law, Frank Nichols; a granddaughter, Megan Nichols; and a sister, Ruth Stoelk
