LUELLA SONKSEN

Luella Sonksen, 87, of Mapleton, Iowa, died on Tuesday, February 3, 1987, in a nursing home in Bement, Illinois.

Mrs. Sonksen, the former Luella Johnson, was born on June 3, 1899, to Niels and Mary (Jensen) Johnson, in the Mapleton-Castana area. She married Bernard Sonksen on June 3, 1919, at Onawa, Iowa. The couple farmed east of Mapleton, Iowa, and moved into town in 1944. He died on September 12, 1975. She then moved to Illinois to be near her daughter.

Mrs. Sonksen was a member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Mapleton, Iowa, and the Loren Hollister Post #496, American Legion Auxiliary of Mapleton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence, of Aurora, Colo.; three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Irene) Baker of Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Clifford (Evelyn) Gilman of Tucson, Ariz.; and Mrs. David (Marjorie) Hansen of Mount Zion, Ill.; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Al Bruning, Wilbur McNear, Clarence Burkhart, Herbert Hahn, Jr., Clifford LeFebvre and Marvin Sonksen.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 1987, in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. The Reverend Richard Hempenius officiated. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 1987, in the funeral home.
