Onawa Democrat, Onawa, (Monona), Iowa, 19 Feb 1987:

Orvan J. Hanson, 75, Soldier, Iowa, died on February 10, 1987, in the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.

He was born at Soldier on August 31, 1911, the son of Ole J. and Hilda (Wingate) Hanson. He married Corrinne Cusick August 25, 1938, in Burbank, South Dakota. The couple farmed near Soldier until their retirement. They wintered in Mesa, Arizona, from 1975 to 1985. Mr. Hanson had been a resident of Eventide Nursing Home in Denison since July 1985.

He was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church where he had served as congregation president and was a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He had been a 4-H leader and served on the County Extension Council. He served two terms as president of Monona County Farm Bureau and served on the Harr-Mona Board of Directors and the Monona County Fair Board.

Survivors include his wife, Corrinne; two sons, Jerry Hanson of Buffalo, Okla.; and Phillip Hanson of Fort Lewis, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Jon (Cheryl) Hallquist of Atlantic; a brother, Hersel Hanson of Soldier; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Wallace, Willard and Clarion.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 13, 1987, at the Soldier Lutheran church, Soldier, Iowa, with Pastor Larry Sydow officiating. The organist was Mrs. Ivan Gibbs and the soloist, Craig Swenson, sang “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. The congregation sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Beautiful Savior”.

Honorary bearers were Guy Hanson, Clay Norby, Lowell Amunson, Ralph Gorham, Arnold Melby, Bennett Longlee, Lawrence Major, and Frank Crawford.

Casket bearers were James Severson, Clayton Swenson, Lewis Hadden, James Longlee, Kenneth Lee and David Gorham.

Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Hanson’s name with the Soldier Lutheran Church.
