ETHEL B. SWAN

Ethel B. Swan, rural Sloan, Iowa, died at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, on February 1, 1987. Death came at the age of 95 years and one month.

She was born January 1, 1892, at Mapleton, Iowa, to Mary Elizabeth (Buckland) and Justice Castle. She was the oldest of eight children. She lived in Mapleton until her teens, then moved with her family to Turin, Iowa, where she completed all eight grades in school. For a brief time the family lived at Kennebec, Iowa, and there she met Peter Swan. They were married January 1, 1910, at Whiting, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Albaton area. Mr. Swan died March 21, 1957, at Onawa.

Ethel joined Skien Lutheran Church along with her husband in 1928 and she continued her membership there throughout her lifetime. Her hobbies included tat stitching, quilting and writing letters.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Esther Bakke, of Sloan; three sons, Elmer Swan and Glen Swan, both of Sloan and Everett Swan of Reeds Spring, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Kathryn Sandidge of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, William Castle of Meeker, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Mabel Smith in 1982; three grandsons; four sisters and two brothers.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 1987, in Skien Lutheran Church at Albaton with Rev. Peter V. Boe officiating. Mrs. Jon Roarson, the organist, accompanied Mrs. Arnold Brenden, who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Beyond The Sunset”.

Bearers were Pat Swan, Tim Bakke, Todd Copple, Bill Swan, Randy Dunagan and Wayne Bakke, Jr.

Interment was in Skien Lutheran Church Cemetery at Albaton with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.
