MERLE I. BRITTON

Merle I. Britton, 77, passed away at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on February 2, 1987, after a sudden illness.

Merle was born December 14, 1909, to L. Pete and Anna Marie Nielson Mortenson on a farm near Moorhead, Iowa, and attended school there. Her parents were early residents of Monona County, coming here from Denmark in 1885.

On August 17, 1929, she was united in marriage to Marvin R. Britton at Elk Point, South Dakota. They resided on a farm northeast of Soldier until they retired in 1974 when they moved to Ute, Iowa. Marvin died July 14, 1976, in Onawa.

Merle was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lowell (Patricia) Hinrichsen of Ute and Ardyce Boeck of Oceanside, Calif.; two sons, Robert of Muncie, Ind., and Gary of Toledo, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; four sisters, Opal, Violet, Hannah and Hulda; three brothers, Nels, John and Stanley; her parents and one grandson.

Merle was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 1987, in the Soldier Lutheran Church with Rev. Sydow officiating. Mrs. Ivan Gibbs, the organist, accompanied Craig Swenson who sang “Heaven Is My Home” and “How Great Thou Art”.

Bearers were Bradley Britton, Brian Britton, Dan Kozisek, Lyle Carritt, Dillon Hunter and Jerome Mordhorst.

Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Church Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Soldier, Iowa.
