MORTON E. FREEMAN

Morton E. Freeman, 61, Whiting, Iowa, died January 9, 1987, in Burgess Memorial Hospital, Onawa, Iowa, after suffering a heart attack.

He was born August 15, 1925, in Monroe, South Dakota, to Lyle and Carrie (Griebel) Freeman. He grew up in Alpena where he graduated from high school. During World War II he served as a medical corpsman with the U. S. Marine Corps. He attended Dakota Wesleyan College and graduated from the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University at Brookings. He served his apprenticeship in Dawson, Minnesota. On August 13, 1950, he married Joyce McNutt in Alpena, South Dakota. He was associated with the Charles Pfizer Company from 1954 to 1958. On January 1, 1958, he and Joyce opened Freeman Pharmacy with they own and are still operating in Whiting.

He had been mayor of Whiting for a total of 14 years from 1966–1973 and from 1976–1982. He was past president of Whiting Community Club, was a volunteer fireman, and a member of Monona County Social Welfare Board. He was currently vice-president of the board of Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa from its inception until the present and was staff pharmacist at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Whiting where he was currently serving on the Endowment Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; and two daughters, Lou Ellen Freeman of Harlan and Mrs. Roger (Barbara) Yudka of Onawa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lou Vaine.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 1987, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at Whiting with Rev. Dr. Duane Meyer officiating. The organist was Mrs. E. B. Matthews and the pianist was Mrs. Florence Garred. Mrs. Arnold Brenden and Jan Brenden sang “It Is Well With My Soul” “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Bearers were Vincent Willey, Richard Nolan, Wally Parker, Claire Harris, Dr. John Garred, Sr., and John Holmes.

Interment was in Kennebec Cemetery at Castana, Iowa, with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
