GEORGE BOWMAN

George Bowman, 85, a longtime resident of Onawa, Iowa, died on December 30, 1986, in St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, following a short illness.

He was born in Thurston County, Nebraska, on March 17, 1901. His parents were Abe and Flora Mae (Rich) Bowman. He moved to Onawa from Macy, Nebraska, in 1925. On July 15, 1946, he married Helen Richardson in Sioux City. He had been employed by the City of Onawa in the Water and Sewer Department.

Mr. Bowman was a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Onawa; a son, George Jr., of Jefferson, S.D.; four daughters, Mrs. Irene Franklin of Sioux City, Kathryn Cooper of Yucaipa, Calif.; Mrs. Georgine Mattas of San Diego, Calif.; and Mrs. Eldon (Virginia) Emmick of Clear Lake, Ia.; five stepsons, Kenneth, Keith, Charles and Larry Richardson, all of Onawa, and Guy Richardson of Whiting; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Harl of Onawa; three brothers, William, of Tekamah, Nebr.; and Charlie and Earl, both of South Sioux City, Nebr.; 58 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; four brothers, three sisters, one daughter and one stepson and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 2, 1987, at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Jerry Quandt and Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. The organist, Mrs. Vince Phillips, played “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Rock of Ages”.

Honorary bearers were Merle Mock, John Tyson, Everett Sorenson, Ora Townsend, Orville Rutledge, and Ernest Holsclaw.

Active casket bearers were Gordon Richardson, Scott Richardson, Brian Richardson, Lynn Richardson, Mike Richardson and Randy Richardson.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
