Mapleton High School graduate of 1942 remembered

Berneice J. Green, 81, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Mapleton, died Saturday, July 15, 2006, in Omaha.

Memorial services were 10 a.m. Thursday, July 20 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Omaha with the Revs. Don Shane and Damien Wee officiating. Burial was Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Mapleton.

Berneice Jeanette (Hupke) Green was born on Dec. 13, 1924, in Woodbury County, Iowa, to Frank and Helen (Ryan) Hupke, the second child of eight children born to this union. Her family left the farm and moved to Mapleton in 1937. Berneice attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1942.

Berneice was united in Holy Matrimony to Scott J. Green on Jan. 18, 1945, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. The couple lived and raised their family in Mapleton the first part of their married life as members of St. Mary's Parish.

In November 1968, the couple moved to Omaha. Berneice began work in 1969 at Payless Cashway Lumber Company rand retired from there as head bookkeeper in 1988. While living in Omaha, Berneice and Scott were members of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. The couple had celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary before Scott passed away April 9, 2003.

In addition to her husband, Berneice was preceded in death by her sons, Francis in 1994 and Louis in 2003; a daughter, Beverly Koeppen in 2006; her Barents, Frank and Helen; a brother, Lawrence; and infant brother, Herbert.

Survivors include her children, Jeanette (Roger Anderson of Omaha and Leslie Jean Green o Elkhorn, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Mark Anderson Ryan Green, Tara (Anderson) Compton, Shawnie(Koeppen) Allen, Heather (Koeppen) Hulber, Jenelle (Green) Rock, Anthony Green, Justin
Koeppen, Joel Green and Scott 0. Green; two step-grandsons, Chris Anderson and Kevin Anderson; five great-grandchildren, Cecilia Rock, Marek Hulber, Ian Rock and Anderson and Everett Compton; two step-great-grandchildren, Christopher Anderson and Lindsey Anderson; a son-in-law, Larry Koeppen of Gladstone Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Sue Green of Bellevue, Neb.; two brothers; Wilfred (Dottie) Hupke of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Lester (Frances) Hupke of Carlisle, Iowa; three sisters, LouAnn (Robert) Owens of Sarasota, Fla., JoAnn (Robert) Frahm of Galva, Iowa, and Loretta Hupke of Los Alamos, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Jerry Hupke of Celina, Texas; and many loving and caring nieces, nephews and dear friends. Lovingly known as "Mother Green," Berneice was a mother to many.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
