Donald 0. "Don" Olson, 73, formerly of Sioux City and Mapleton, passed from this life on Friday, July 14, 2006, following a courageous battle with cancer at his home in Johnston, Iowa.
Services were; 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Interment and committal services were in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
Don was born on June 2, 1933, in Castana to Oscar W. and Agnes L. Larsen Olson.
He married Darlene Ann Leonard on May 22, 1955, at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Don was the owner of Merle Hay Lanes in Des Moines. He had been in the bowling business for nearly 35 years, owning bowling centers in Boone, Iowa, Topeka, Kan., and Mapleton. In his earlier years, Don was a carpenter by trade.
He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in McKinney, Texas, and the Local 948 Sioux City Carpenter's Union.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Darlene Olson of Johnston; a son, Mark Olson and his wife Deb of Johnston; two daughters, Tammy King and Michele Forbis, both of
McKinney, Texas; a sister, Marge Suhr and her husband Kenneth of Deep River, Conn.; 10 grandchildren, Greg Olson, Justin Olson, Nicole King, Chelsi King, Hayley King, Kristin Forbis, Andy Eiselstein, Christine Eiselstein, Courtney Simpson and Collin McCoy; and seven nieces and nephews.Don was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation was Monday, July 17, at the funeral home.
