UTE, Iowa -- Loretta M. Seufert, 99, of Ute died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ute, with the Rev. Donald Slaven officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 5:30 and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Loretta Martha Seufert was born June 29, 1907, near Ute, the daughter of William and Mary (Cronin) Shanahan. She first attended rural school and later St. Boniface Catholic School in Charter Oak, Iowa. She graduated from Ute High School with the class of 1925. After attending Normal School, she taught in rural schools for several years.

She married Joseph Seufert on Feb. 14, 1933. The couple farmed in the Ute area until 1969, when they retired and moved into Ute. Joseph died June 12, 1979.

She was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Rosary Society.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Donald and JoAnne Seufert of Ute; a daughter and her husband, Mary Ellen and Martin Burke of Sioux City; two daughters-in-law, Marie Seufert of Denison, Iowa, and Donna Seufert of Atlantic, Iowa; 18 grandchildren and spouses, Colleen and Bob Henderson of Ute, Joseph and Jodi Seufert of Carroll, Iowa, Trish Garton of Sioux City, James Seufert of Aurora, Colo., Sheila and Lance Odom of Eagle, Neb., Clayton and Nancy Seufert of Charleston, S.C., Lorri Seufert of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Brenda Steffens of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Jill and Keith Simons of Red Oak, Iowa, Monica and Donny Wilson of Greenfield, Iowa, Jeremy and Melissa Seufert of Atlantic, Iowa, Kevin and Ann Seufert of Elkader, Iowa, Michael and Amy Seufert of Rosendale, Mo., Jeffrey Seufert of Iowa City, Iowa, Joellen and Steve VanTuyl of Sioux City, Jana and Kyle Turner of Sioux City, James and Ann Burke of Cari, Ill., and Jarold and Tonya Burke of Kansas City, Mo.; 23 great-grandchildren; a

great-great-grandson; and a sister, Margie Pithan of Mapleton, Iowa.

Along with her husband, Joseph, she was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Shanahan; two sons, William and Richard Seufert; a sister, Marie Shanahan; a brother and his wife, Vincent and Teresa Shanahan; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Pithan.
