Houses Close An Hour

Funeral services for Harry L. Zediker, 11-year-old World War veteran who passed away Monday morning in the Veterans hospital in Des Moines after a week's illness with pneumonia, were held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church with Rev Joseph Pickersgill, pastor of the church, in charge.

Burial was in Heisler cemetery under the direction of the Dyers Funeral home.

Members of the American Legion post in Mapleton, of which Mr. Zediker was an active member ever since it was organized, attended in a body and furnished colors and a color guard.

At the cemetery a firing squad made up of members of the Legion fired a salute to the dead and then taps was sounded by C. G Whiting and echo taps by Ople Brown the "Soldier's Farewell."

Fellow Legionnaires, Barney Sonksen, Howard Haskin, Vern Prunty, James Satterlee and Howard Powell, all of Mapleton, and J E. Beers of Castana served as pall bearers.

Mapleton business houses were closed during the services from 2 t o 3 o'clock.

Mr. Zediker, son of Lewis L. Zediker and Mrs. J W Smothers, was born February 28, 1892, in Cooper Township. He grew to manhood in this community and had spent his entire life here with the exception of seven months when he served in Company I of the Replacement Regiment during the World War.

Since his discharge he had resided here with his father and had operated the Mapleton Grinding works on West Main Street. Although ill health had been falling for some time, he was not considered in a serious condition until a week ago when he contracted pneumonia. He was taken to the Veterans hospital Saturday and passed away early Monday.

He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. F. D. Carson of Sioux City, Mrs. Floyd Bouslaugh of Decatur, Neb., and Miss Frances Zediker of Mapleton, and three brothers, Orville E. Zediker, Roy E. Zediker and William L. Zediker, all of Mapleton.

The Press joins with the many friends of Mr. Zediker in extending sincere sympathy to those left to mourn his untimely passing brought on early in life from strenuous service in France during the World War. May his premature death be a further stimulus toward the goal of a world peace.
