Funeral held Thursday for Charles M. Pinkney

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the home for Charles Milton Pinkney, 85 years old, who died Tuesday of last week in his home. Rev C. H. Van Metro of the Methodist church officiated. Interment was in Heisler cemetery under the direction of the Duschl Funeral Home.

Charles Milton Pinkney was born March 6, 1847, on a farm in Linn county, lowa. He was the second child of Charles Pinkney and Lydia Amanda Brown. His father and Uncle Horace Brown were the first settlers in Linn County.

When a small child he moved with his parents to Grant County, Wis., where his mother died, leaving his father a widower with six children. His father with his family then migrated by covered wagon to Blue Earth, Minn., where they resided for a short time. During this time the Indian massacre occurred. This was one of the big experiences of Mr. Pinckney’s life and he thoroughly enjoyed relating it to his many friends.

They then moved to the Sioux Valley, near Smithland. At the age of 23 Mr. Pinkney came to Old Mapleton and purchased a large grist mill on Simmons creek. It was here he met and married Elizabeth Eleanor Pixley, daughter of Mrs. Francis O'Neil, July 1, 1870— 62 years ago. He built a home in the village and operated the mill successfully for some time, and then taught school a few terms

When New Mapleton was laid out he came here and worked as section foreman on the Milwaukee railroad for a number of years. He then purchased the farm where Elmer Wilson resides and made his home there for several years. Since he has lived in Mapleton and devoted his time to his home and garden.

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife and one son, Francis, of Mapleton: two brothers, Horace and John, and one sister, living on the western coast, and numerous other relatives and many friends.
