5 November 1897

Near one o'clock on Friday afternoon, October 29, 1897, the death angel relieved from earthly cares and suffering the soul of Horace D. Nourse, aged 50 years.

Horace Nourse was born in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, N. Y, in 1847, and in the year 1854 moved with his parents to Pennsylvania. When in November, 1863, the call to arms was made he enlisted with the 12th Pennsylvania cavalry, and was in the service until the close of the war. No soldier ever mustered out of the Union army with a clearer record or more faithful servitude than did Horace Nourse, and it has been the writer's privilege on several occasions to hear from his lips interesting accounts of his numerous experiences while fighting for the preservation of the Union.

At the close of the war in 1866 Mr. Nourse came to Monona County and entered the homestead north of town where he lived so many years, an honorable, upright citizen, an ideal neighbor, esteemed by all who had dealings with him or formed his acquaintance. About a year ago he traded his farm for a piece of land near New Holland, South Dakota, and later with his son's family located thereon and began to build up a new home. All went well until about two months since, when he was attacked with stomach trouble, and was later brought to Mapleton for medical treatment. But among kind relatives and friends and with ablest medical skill he constantly grew weaker and finally gave up the ghost.

Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church Sunday forenoon, Rev. E. S. Johnson delivering a sermon full of wisdom and sympathizing words for the sorrowing friends and relatives. Hoskins Post, G. A. R. had charge of the ceremonies and tenderly laid their comrade to rest among the silent in Heisler cemetery.

The deceased's aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Nourse, still survive, together with a son and three brothers.
