WHITING, Iowa -- Shirley Ann (Mathers) Hummel, 82, of Whiting passed away April 20, 2012 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Skien Lutheran Church in rural Sloan, Iowa, with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Shirley was born Dec. 2, 1929 in Kingsley, Iowa, daughter of Mike and Mabel (Kroeger) Mathers. She graduated from East High School in Sioux City in 1947.

Shirley and Robert Hummel were united in marriage on April 2, 1949. They made their home in Cushing, Iowa, and later moved to Sloan, Iowa. Shirley was a stay-at-home mother for most of her life. She worked at Westwood Community Schools for the lunch program and was the Sunday school superintendent at Skien Lutheran Church for 31 years. She was a very active member of the church for many years. She was an avid reader, seamstress and a great cook.

Survivors include her children, Kathy (Andy) Sieger of Whiting, Kevin (Denise) Hummel of Sloan, Linda (John) Gronert of Urbandale, Iowa, and Scott (Angelique) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Carrie (Jon) Turnquist, Laura (A.J.) Rieder, Heather Hummel, Nicole (Austin) Lee, Ben and Elizabeth Gronert, Mya and Noah Hummel, and Ashton Harling; four great-grandchildren, Brittany Turnquist, Hallie Lee and Grace and Alexa Rieder; two brothers, Dan (Loretta) Mathers of Urbandale, and Terry (Judy) Mathers of Denton, Texas; a brother-in-law, David (Joan) Hummel of Danbury, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Kyle; a grandson, Chad Sieger; a great-grandson, Tyler Turnquist; a brother, Waylend Dean Mathers; two sisters, Jervonne (Jim) Holmes and Judy (Don) Beaumont; and a brother-in-law, Fran (Alice) Hummel.

Memorials may be directed to the Sloan Library and the Skien Lutheran Church.
