26 Feb 1970Fred Johnk, son of John and Lena Johnk, was born January 6, 1889 in Cooper Township near Mapleton and died Thursday, February 19, 1970 at a Sioux City hospital having reached t he age of 81 years, one month and 13 days.
He farmed and resided in Cooper Township until 1924 at which time he and his wife moved to Oto. From 1924 until 1960 he owned and operated the Fred Recreation Parlor in Oto.
He served as Mayor of Oto for several years and was also on the town council. He also drove a school bus for eight years, and was a member of the Oto School Board. He was a member of the Knights of Pithians.
On February 26, 1919 at Mapleton he married Minnie Sonksen.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnk had celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last February.
Survivors include; his wife, Minnie of Mapleton; one son, Carl of Hornick; three grandsons; three brothers, Gustave of Milo, Alberta, Canada; John of Hood River, Oregon; and LeRoy of Ida Grove, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Ferry Mapleton and Mrs. Chris Albertson of Anthon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, and one sister.
Services were held Saturday, February 21, 1970 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Mapleton with Rev. Henrey held officiating.
Burial was in Heisler Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Date Timmerman, Marvin Eskildsen, Aldre Scheer, Paul Miller, Gus Mead and Guy Kunkel.
