10 May 1990Robert Vernon Dean, 71, of Mapleton died Monday, April 30, 1990, in a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. John's United Methodist Church at Mapleton with the Rev. Stephen R. Root Jr. officiating. The body was cremated. There was no visitation. McCulloch Funeral Home of Moville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Heisler Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion at Mapleton.
Mr. Dean was born July 13, 1918, in Mapleton and was a lifelong resident. He married Gala Riley March 7, 1941, in Sioux City. He was formerly employed as a police officer in Mapleton: worked in construction and was a farmer for several years in the Mapleton area before retiring.
Mr. Dean was a Methodist He was a member of Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion of Mapleton. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Leslie "Butch" of Sealy, Texas; Danny of Westfield, Iowa; Vernon of Hubbard, Nebraska; Larry of Ashton, Idaho; Terry of Danbury, Iowa; Philip of Sioux City and Alan of Jacksonville, Florida; five daughters, Roberta "Bobbie" Chandler of Forsyth, Montana: Mary Jane Sahl of Indio, California; JoLene Ladwig of Ida Grove, Iowa; Sheryl Welte of Danbury, Iowa; and Nona Woodward of Charter Oak, Iowa; thirty-six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen of Wetaskine, Alberta, Canada and Bill of Sioux City; and three sisters, Ethel Brockelsby of Scandia, Alberta Canada; Florence Leetch of Wylie, Texas: and Dorothy Rose of Mapleton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters and three brothers.
