Fern V. Dean, age 80, of Mapleton died Sunday, April 16, 1995, at Onawa. Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Rev. Stephen Root officiating. Burial was in Heisler Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist and the music was "He Is Risen" and "Old Rugged Cross". A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walter-Armstrong Chapel, Mapleton.

Fern Dean was born November 19. 1914. near Danbury in Woodbury County to Harvey and Mahala (Hostetler) Herrington. As a child she lived one year near Oto and moved with her parents to Monona County where she lived all her life. She married Claude Dean August 13, 1934, at Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Mapleton community. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved into Mapleton. Claude died December 26, 1988. Fern later moved to Onawa and entered the Elmwood Care Center in 1989.

Fern was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church. Methodist Church
Circle, Ladies Aide and the Sunshine Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Ila and her husband, Ben McClure of Onawa, Iowa; two sons, Jimmie and his wife, Fran of Hinsdale, Illinois and Donald and his wife, Marge of Romeoville, Illinois: two sisters, Doris and her husband, Felix
Wiseman of Magnolia, Iowa and Frances and her husband, Ernie Koeppen of Mapleton, 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Loren.

Pallbearers were David McGrain, Carl McGrain, Ron McGrain, Larry Hieber, Richard Bumann and Steve Bumann.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
