July 31, 2011Fern Letterly, 95, of Onawa, formerly of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Ola Fern was born in Bartelsville, Okla., on July 9, 1916 to Claude C and Onie May Irish. She had six brothers and six sisters. She moved with her family to Salix, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from St. Joseph High School.
Fern married Theodore William Ericksen in 1939, and they became parents to two sons, Robert C. of Canton, Ga., and Roland (Ron) Lee Ericksen of Sioux City. Theodore died in 1978. Fern married William McCall. They lived in Onawa, where they owned a Sinclair gas station for many years until moving to a farm in Castana. Bill passed away in May of 2000. In 2004, Fern married Raymond (Dude) Letterly. They resided in Mapleton until they moved to Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa. Dude passed away in January of 2011.
Fern loved the outdoors, especially gardening and living on the farm in Castana, where she raised livestock for many years. She also loved her "fancy" work and pieced many quilts.
Fern is survived by her two sons, Robert and Ron; two sisters, Rosalie Torticill of Onawa, and Betty Grimsley of Ankeny, Iowa. Fern will be missed by her daughter-in-law; many nieces, nephews and friends; as well as her five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; four sisters; and her husbands.
