July 28, 2011Dorothy D. Klanderud, 89, of Mapleton died Monday, July 29, 2011, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with Pastor Karen Garrison officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Wynot (Neb.) City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Dorothy Delores Klanderud was born Jan. 11, 1922, at Wynot, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Nygaard) Klanderud. She completed high school and later moved to California, living there for 40 years. In 1983, she moved to Mapleton, where her sister resides.
She worked at the Mapleton Library, West Central Development, the school lunch counter and the school library. She managed Small's Fruit Market in Mapleton for 20 years. For more than 25 years, she was associated with the Maple Valley Anthon-Oto Athletic Department. She was a resident of Maple Crest Apartments in Mapleton where she started there cleaning and opening and closing the center. She was eventually promoted to onsite manager of Maple Crest Housing.
Dorothy was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, where she actively served on multiple committees and taught Sunday school. She was a member of Royal Neighbors, the Birthday Club and American Legion Auxiliary Loren Hollister Unit 496 of Mapleton. She received a certificate of appreciation as Area 8 Site Manager of the Year on Oct. 8, 2004. She received the Governor's Volunteer Award, honoring and recognizing the commitment, service and time she donated to the school.
Survivors include her sister, Marguerite (Lawrence) Nelson of Mapleton; her brother, Louis Klanderud of Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; a baby brother; a sister-in-law, Lucille Klanderud; and a nephew, Tim Klanderud.
