Kathryn C. Crum, 81, of Mapleton passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Kathryn Christen Crum was born Dec. 14, 1929 near Danbury Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Neoma "Sharkey" Schwarz. She attended school in the Charter Oak-Ute area.

Kathryn was united in marriage to Vincent J. Crum on Jan. 16, 1949 in Dow City Iowa. In the early years, Kathryn was a housewife and mother and raised her seven children after which time she worked for the Maple Valley School District as a cook for 13 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a devoted member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. She was also a Sunday school teacher, devoted mother and grandmother, and a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid. Her interests included word search, embroidery, cooking and playing cards. Favorite card games were Skip-o and UNO. She loved to have breakfast every Saturday at the Beef N Brew with family and friends.

Those survivors left to honor Kathryn's memory are her four sons, Richard of Sioux City, Robert and his wife Jan of Mapleton, Randy and his wife Lori, of Denison, Iowa, and Rick of Treynor, Iowa; three daughters, Karen Erickson and her husband Mike of Concord, N.C., Kathy Crum of Mapleton, and Karla Olson of Des Moines, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mardella Andresen and her husband Bob of Schleswig, Iowa; and a brother, Richard Schwarz and wife Joannie of Spencer, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vince on Aug. 25, 2008; one son, Dale; a brother, Jim; and one great-grandson, Jordan Thies.

Kathryn's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Crawford County Public Health and Hospice and Dr. Hoffman as well as the staff at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
