8 April 1982Mrs. William Birtwell, 70, of Mapleton, died Saturday, April 3, 1982 in a Sioux City hospital.
Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Walter Funeral Home in- Mapleton. The Rev. Keith Hair officiated. Burial was in the Heisler Cemetery, rural Mapleton. There was a prayer service at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Mrs. Birtwell, the former Loretta Kenney was born to Robert William Kenney and Rose Lee on April 14, 1911 in Mapleton. She was valedictorian of the class of 1929 at Mapleton High School.
She married William Birtwell December 25, 1929 at Mapleton. During the war years they lived in Oregon and Nevada, returning to Mapleton. She worked as a nurse's aide at Maple Heights Nursing Home for several years. Mr. Birtwell died May 29, 1976.
She entered the Correctionville Nursing Home in October of 1978 and was named Ms. Nursing Home Queen for Northwest Iowa in 1981. She was a writer for the Manorism Newspaper at the home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson and two sisters.
Survivors include one son, Daniel of Cherokee; two daughters, Mrs. Milton (Crystal) Vaughn of Hawthorne, Nevada, and Mrs. Lloyd (Arlene) Stines of Correctionville; three sisters, Mrs. John (Dora) Hinrickson, Jr., of Mapleton, Mrs. George (Myrna) Seibold of Sioux City and Mrs. Laura Merritt of Commerce, California; eleven grandchildren and thirteen-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Daniel Birtwell, Rick Stines, Terry Oder, Homer Stines, Robert Vaughn, Tim Knaack, Lloyd Steffens, Domingo Caseneda, Lloyd Lee Stines, Jr. and William Vaughn.
