Mathaus "Matt" Joseph Grell, 56, of Soldier passed away Friday, July 15, 2011, at his residence following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until the service time Wednesday at the funeral home. A gathering of friends for a celebration of Matt's life will be held at the AK Corral at a later date.

Matt was born Sept. 12, 1954, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Velma Carter Grell. He graduated from Maple Valley High School. After graduation, he worked for his parents and then for Westendorf's. He also worked for Farmland Foods for 20 years.

He loved to work with his hands and could always be found working on old trucks and cars. He also enjoyed camping, flying, hunting, and watching others fish. He was a genuine gentleman. He had a passion for animals, especially horses. He was a very special and caring uncle to his nieces and nephews. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Western movies and had a knack for remembering names of actors and the movies in which they starred.

He is survived by his three brothers, Arnold "Butch" J. and his wife, Charlene of Moville, Iowa, Willie and his wife, Luann of Hornick, Iowa, and Eddie of Soldier; four sisters, Cora Ann and her husband, Jack of Del Rio, Texas, Sarah and her husband, Rex of Hornick, Velma and Tina of Onawa, Iowa, and Katie and her husband, Mark of Denison, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Ron of Danbury, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. He also had two very special pets, Ginger and Hoser

Matt was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bonnie; and one infant brother, Daniel.
