LaVern Joesph Rauterkus, 87, of Mapleton passed away May 26, 2012, in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Brian Danner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Online condolences can be made at armstrongfuneral.com.

LaVern Joesph Rauterkus was born on March 26, 1925, near Mapleton, to Frank and Rose (Zeimen) Rauterkus. He grew up in the Mapleton area, working many years as a pin-setter at Mapleton Lanes Bowling Alley and was also a farm hand.

Later in life, he enjoyed working with wood, playing cards with the coffee shop bunch, searching second-hand shops for bargains, and spending time with family and friends. LaVern was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

LaVern is survived by one sister, Mary Lown of Estherville, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends.

LaVern is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Al and his wife, Justine Rauterkus, Gilbert and his wife, Helen Rauterkus, Silven and his wife, Irene Rauterkus, Frank, and Lester; and a brother-in-law, Frank Lown.
