Carol Jean Larson, 72, of Hugo, Colo., formerly of Ute, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, in Hugo.

There will be no services.

Carol was born on July 29, 1940, in Monona County, Iowa, the daughter of Ferne Larson of Ute, Iowa. She attended a country school in Harrison County and later graduated from Ute High School in 1958.

She lived a lot of places including Nebraska, California, West Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Iowa, and Colorado. Carol had all types of jobs from picking cotton in Louisiana, to being the first female welder on the West Virginia pipeline. She was a financial secretary at Creighton University and Hospital in Nebraska. She spent most of her last 43 years in Colorado, where she was a packer for Graeble Moving and Storage, a bartender in Denver, and a supervisor for K-Mart. The last 21 of those years were spent in Strasburg, Colo., where she worked for Posey's, Hank's and MGS in Bennett, Colo. Carol retired in 2003 and enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Carol loved camping, fishing and critters of all kinds. She was always rescuing something and always tended to their needs before thinking of herself.

She had a drive that was unstoppable and attacked life. She always managed to have a positive outlook and refused to say "I can't." Carol survived polio as a child and was a three-time cancer survivor. She was very proud of that. Unfortunately after 72 years, Carol succumbed to Alzheimer's on Aug. 6, 2012, a battle she could not win.

Carol is survived by her brothers, Michael Larson of Charter Oak, Iowa, and Albert Lawson and family of Mapleton, Iowa; daughter, Gwendolyn Larson of Strasburg, Colo.; grandchildren, Felicia, Billy, and Buddy; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ferne Larson formerly of Ute; and a granddaughter, Angela Larson of Byers, Colo.
