Donald W. Solberg, 84, of Moorhead passed away Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, due to injuries suffered in a farm accident.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with Masonic Rites conducted by Elk Lodge 586 and Vesper Lodge 223 AF & AM at 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service, all at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service of Onawa.

Donald was born Nov. 14, 1926, in Moorhead to LaVerne and Alice (Ulven) Solberg and was one of five children. He grew up in Moorhead, graduated from Moorhead High School, and worked with his father in the Well business. While attending school, he was active in sports and was one of the Male Home Economics Class that served hot lunches for that year. They were featured in the Des Moines Register.

He joined the U. S. Army in 1945 and served two years; much of his time was spent in Hawaii. He received an honorable discharge and returned to Moorhead to continue working with his father. In 1960, he bought the Solberg Well Company, which still thrives today.

Don and JoAnn Ewing were united in marriage at Bethesda Lutheran Church on June 4, 1951. Don was later baptized at Bethesda.

To this union six children were born. They lived in Moorhead until 1957, then moved to their farm and have resided there since.

For many years Don was a Luther League sponsor along with JoAnn and Jim and Elsie Kalskett. Easter morning breakfasts and the time spent with the kids were the highlights of many good times with the young people of the Church.

He had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and the 75th Anniversary of the Well Co. business. He was a 60-year member of Peter A. Hansen Post 365, a 59-year member of Elk Lodge 586 and Vesper Lodge 223 AF & AM and also a past member of Order of the Eastern Star.

As a family, they spent many summers water skiing, camping and seeing the beautiful sights around the country. Now you can hear all of them reminiscing, JoAnn; Becky (Steve) Anderson of Alexandria, Minn., Toni Engelhardt of Houston, Texas, Larry (Lori) Solberg, Lisa Solberg (Ken Holtz) and Scott Solberg (Vanessa Weldon), all of Moorhead; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; three brothers; numerous nieces and nephews; and many great friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeff; his parents; his sister; and many in-laws.

Events over the years taught him to take life as it comes and to accept things that he could not change, with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his blue eyes. His motto was, "If you don't laugh today, you've wasted a whole day". Those who knew Don would have heard him say, "Don't cry for me, I've had a great life!"
