Norman G. Dittman of Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Whiting, entered peace on June 27, 2011, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Santa Clara, Calif., after a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Tom Scott officiating.

Norman was born April 20, 1936, in Sioux City, the son of Eugene Dittman and Elizabeth (Fletcher) Dittman. Norman graduated from Letourneau University in Long View, Texas, where he studied civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Army as a Nuclear Artillery Specialist. After his discharge, he was employed by Aerojet Propulsion Company in Sacramento, Calif., as a process engineer. He then went to work for Ford Motor Company as a Factory Representative to the Texas dealerships. His final job took him to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, where he worked as a Propulsion Engineer on the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program for 20 years. He planned to retire and return to his farm in Whiting.

Norman's interests were many, including traveling and flying airplanes. He earned his private pilot's license and owned several airplanes. He had a keen interest in mechanics and liked to "fix" and "modify" most anything.

He is survived by his uncles, Glen Dittman of Onawa and Albert Dittman of Bouse, Ariz.; and a cousin, Susan Dittman of Omaha, Neb.

Norman leaves behind a host of close friends across California, Texas, Nebraska and Iowa. He was truly loved and respected by all of them. The last weeks of his life, many of his friends came to cheer him up and wish him well.
