Mrs. Amanda West Is Buried Friday
Funeral Services for Long Time Resident in County Held At Ticonic

Funeral services for Mrs. Amanda West, 76-year-old resident of Ticonic, mother of Mrs. Herbert Miller of Mapleton and sister of Charles Peacock and Mrs. Lottie Harris, also of Mapleton, who passed away at her home at Ticonic March 2, were held Friday afternoon in the Methodist church at Ticonic. Rev, Alonzo Pruitt and Rev. H. I. Pharo officiated.

Interment was in the Grant cemetery under the direction of the Willman Funeral home of Rodney.

Six grandsons acted as pallbearer s and six grandsons as honorary pallbearers.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Pruitt, Mrs. George McMasters, Evan Beers and Kinmar Jordahl. Mrs. Blanche Woodward accompanied at the piano.

Amanda Ellen Peacock was born in Maysville, Mo., July 24, 1861. She came with her parents to Iowa when 6 years of age, first settling three miles north of where the town of Oto is now located. From there they moved to a farm her father homesteaded 2 miles east and 2 miles south of where uptown, of Ticonic now stands.

There she grew to womanhood, attending school as opportunity; afforded. Her first school attended was in the first school house in Grant Township, a very poorly constructed building, little better than a shed, with two rows of homemade seats. Students did all their writing and arithmetic holding their slates on their knees.

In I877 she was married to Amos West in Onawa. They started housekeeping on Mrs. West father’s homestead, remaining there one year. They lived on different farms near Ticonic until 1886 when they moved to Washington territory, remaining there seven years before moving back to Monona County.

Mr. West passed away in May 1901 leaving his widow; with 11 children, Mrs. West kept her family together, rearing them the best it was possible.

She is survived by her children, Mrs. Minnie Forker of Ticonic, James West of Onawa, Mrs. Lilli a n Hagerdon of Smithland, Mrs. Bertha Ernest of Ticonic, Mrs. Dora Ernst of Sioux City, Mrs. Iva Mille r of Mapleton, John West of Sioux City, McKinley West of Ticonic, Mrs. Amey Phiffer of Onawa, Mrs. Mary Miller of Oto, one daughter, Ona West, died in infancy. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, 25 great -grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Harris of Mapleton, Mrs. Lillie Mitchell of Weatherly, Ohio, and Mrs. C.O. Newman of Ticonic, and one brother, Mr. Peacock of Mapleton.
