Fred Glenn Smothers, the son of Henry and Mary Etta Smothers, was born July 8, 1884, in Smithland. He died May 6, 1966, at the hospital at Battle Creek, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 28 days, after a long illness.

Mr. Smothers was the second to the youngest child in a family of ten. He lived on a farm with his parents until his marriage to his first wife, Ada Olson, who died in 1946. He farmed in the Smithland community until he moved into the town of Smithland in 1938. H e moved to Mapleton in 1954. He married Pearl Wertz on September 23, 1963 at Luverne, Minn. They lived in Mapleton until his death.

Mr. Smothers was a member of the Methodist church in Mapleton.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, May 8, 1966, at the Walter Chapel in Mapleton. Rev. Leonard Rowse, pastor of St John's Methodist church, officiated. Interment was in Grant Cemetery near Rodney, Iowa, under direction of the Walter Funeral Service.

Pallbearers were Wesley Lundeen, Waldo Lundeen; James Lundeen, Elmer Dale, Orville Lundeen, Henry Springer.

Survivors include the widow, Pearl, of Mapleton; two daughters, Mrs. Eva Short of Norris City. Ill, and Mrs. Hattie Kramer of Hillsboro, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Jennie Cripe of Ravenwood, Missouri; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, six brothers and two sisters.
