Effie Mead Smothers

Funeral services for Effie Mead Smothers, 68, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Smithland. Rev Worthie K. Usher, pastor, conducted the services. Burial was- In the Grant cemetery with Willman funeral home at Rodney in charge. Pallbearers were Arthur Kohloff, Arthur Worrell, Don Sulsberger, Paul McGarr, Louis Gallup and Joe Jones.

A ladies quartet Mrs. Lyle Wood, Mrs. Jay Watson, Mrs. Harold Fowler and Mrs. Clarence Price sang "The Old Hugged Cross" and "No Night There." Mrs. John Cook and Mrs. Carl Callaghan cared for flowers. Effie Jane Smothers was born Aug. 15, 1886 in Theo, Wash. to Mr. and Mrs. Piatt Mead and died in a Sioux City hospital May 29, 1955 at the age of 68 years. She was one of seven children. She lived in Washington state, then attended high school in Chicago, Ill. and graduated from high school in Sioux City. The remainder of her life was spent in Sioux City and Smithland,living with her parents and employing her talents of nursing and music.

July 9, 1951 she was united in marriage to Fred Smothers in Dakota City, Neb. She was a member of the Methodist church. Woman's Society of Christian Service and the Smithland Cemetery society. Surviving are the husband, Fred; one sister, Mrs. Ina Royal of California; two brothers, Cato Mead of California and Gordon Mead of Washington, two stepchildren and 8 step-grandchildren.
