Vernon Schiltz, age 82, of Remsen, Iowa, died Sunday, January 11, 1998, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, after a brief illness.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. Timothy Johnson of Remsen and Rev. Terry Roder of Carroll, Iowa, officiating. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa. A parish rosary was held on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8:00-p.m. by the Catholic Order of Foresters, all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Schiltz was born April 19, 1915, to John and Susan (Treinen) Schiltz in rural Remsen. He was raised and educated in the Remsen area and was then engaged in farming with his parents near Remsen. He married the former Darlene Marsh June 10, 1958 at Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm near Remsen where Vernon continued to farm until his death. Darlene died July 18, 1983.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and Luxemburger Brotherhood, all of Remsen. He was an avid card player.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn of Remsen and her fiancé Merlyn Tucker of Boone, Iowa: one grandson, Robert of Remsen; three sisters, Mrs. Ambrose (Rose Mary) Forkenbrock of Junction City, Kansas, Arcnella and her husband, Larry Kurth of Scottsdale, Arizona and Mrs. Glen (Kathleen) Pick of Remsen: one brother, Cletus and his wife, Marjorte Schiltz of Remsen and two brothers-in-law, Norman and his wife, Betty Treinen of Remsen and Clyde and his wife, Hazel Means of Marcus, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by five sisters. Mrs. Peter (Callista) Konz, Mrs. Norman (Mathilda Treinen, Mrs. Kenneth (Clarinda) Holt. Mrs. Medard (Loretta) George and Mrs. Clyde (Norma) Means.

Pallbearers were Bill Forkenbrock, Jim Holt, Donald Konz, Todd Pick, Jeff Schiltz and Alan Weinbrandt.
