Real Pioneer is Called by Death
One of the Country's Oldest Women Dies in Mapleton —Funeral Held Tuesday

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clark Muckey, for Mrs. Malvina Dolan Peacock, 97 years old, who died Sunday in her daughter's home after an illness of about six months.

Rev C.H. Van Metre, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated. Three duets were sung by Mrs. C. F Griffin and Rev Van Metre. Burial was In the Grant cemetery under the direction of Byers funeral home.

Mrs. Peacock, who was one of the oldest women in the country, had 40 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grand children—an unusual distinction on more than 100 relatives were present at her birthday celebration a year ago.

Born June 28, 1834, in Waterford, Ohio, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dolan, she went to near Tipton, Ia. with her parents when she was 10 years of age. Two years later her mother died and she took her mother's place in the home. She obtained an eighth grade education under severe conditions.

On May 11, 1851, she was married to John Peacock at Tipton. They moved to Missouri where they remained until after the Civil war when they came back to Iowa, settling in Warren County. Sixty- two years ago they came to Monona County Her husband died March 3, 1910 at the age of 98. He was too old to be in the Civil war, but transported soldiers by team during the war to St. Louis.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Peacock, six of whom are living. She also took: Abram Hyde when he was 4 years old and reared him. George died in infancy, Rhoda when 7 years old and James when 22 years of age. Surviving children are Mrs. Lee Harris of Royal, Neb., Mrs. Amanda West of Ticonic. Ia., Charles Peacock of Smithland, la., Mrs. Arch Mitchell, Beach Grove, Ind., Mrs. Clark Muckey and Abram Hyde of Mapleton and Mrs. Charles Newman of Ticonic, la.

One sister, Mrs. Charlotte Sirfing of California, also survives

Mrs. Peacock was a member of the Baptist church. Her mind was active until Just a few days before her death She was able to read, write and sew without glasses until a few months ago. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Muckey, for the last 10 years. She was the head of three 5-generatlon groups. Twenty three presidents have held office during her life time. Forced to go to work in the home after her mother's death, Mrs. Peacock worked hard all her life as the wife and a farmer and the mother of a large family. She was devoted to her home and children and made many friends who loved to talk with her. She was a great reader and loved to sew, having made dozens of quilts in recent years for her many relatives.
