Gary Gibbs, 65, of Ute passed away on July 2, 2012, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, with the Rev. Carla Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Ute Aaby Post 442 and Ute V.F.W. Post 5605. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Gary Bernard was born on June 3, 1947, in Sioux City, the son of Ivan B. and Gilma (Petersen) Gibbs. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and later confirmed his faith at Soldier Lutheran Church. He graduated from East Monona High School in 1965. After high school, Gary attended a trade school in Kansas City, Mo. After completing school, he came back to Ute and joined the Army National Guard in Mapleton, Iowa, and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. in late summer of 1967. From 1968 to 1969, Gary served overseas in the Vietnam War.

Gary and Joyce E. Phipps were united in marriage on March 29, 1968, in Onawa, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Gary Bryon and Cheryl Lynn. After serving in Vietnam, Gary returned home to farm until 1983. After selling the farm in 1983, he worked at various jobs including Farmland Foods in Denison, Iowa, sales at Case I-H in Onawa, sales at John Deere in Sioux City, drove truck for many years, and was last employed at National Propane until his debilitating heart attack in 1998, when he retired.

Gary enjoyed riding horses, camping, boating, fishing, traveling, and attending VFW events and his grandchildren’s activities.

Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce; a son, Gary Bryon and fiancee, Amy of Omaha; a daughter, Cheryl and husband, Michael J. Mordhorst of Soldier; four grandchildren, Bryon, Ally, and Josh Mordhorst, and Megan Gibbs; and one stepgranddaughter, Maddie Arandus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

Casket bearers were Jeff Mordhorst, Michael D. Mordhorst, John McCall, Jack Parr, Gary McCue, and Stan Ferguson.
