Services Held For Mrs. Charles Newman

Mrs. Charles Newman, 71, died on Tuesday, December 28, 1976 at Fairview Southdale Hospital at Edina, Minnesota after a sudden illness while visiting her daughter and family.

Mrs. Newman, the former Olive C. Burke, was born July 13, 1905 near Soldier. The family moved to Anthon when she was a child. She was graduated from the Anthon High School and attended Morningside College at Sioux City. She taught in rural Anthon schools for several years. She was married December 20, 1924 at Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Anthon-Oto area until they retired in 1968 when they moved to Smithland. She was a member of the United Church of Christ at Oto, the Mite Society of the Church, Rebekah Lodge of Oto, Ladies Study Club of Oto and American Legion Auxiliary Henry McKenna Post 651 of Oto.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Kahabka of Burnsville, Minnesota, Mrs. Marvin (Donna) Funk of Central City, Nebraska, and Mrs. Deane (Jeanette) Kelsey of Smithland; one son, James of Salix; 19 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Leetch of Covina, California, and Mrs. Raleigh, Kendall of Toledo, Iowa; three brothers, Harry of Napa, California, Donald of Hemet, California, and Milford in Oregon.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 1977 at the United Church of Christ at Oto. The Reverend Walter Enstrom officiated.

Honorary pallbearer was Ricky Kahabka of Burnsville, Minn.

Pallbearers were Bob Kelsey of Smithland, Mike Kelsey, stationed with the Army in Germany, Bill Bertrand and Jim Newman, both of Sioux City, Jack, Jerry and Jeff Newman, all of Salix and Dale Kahabka of Burnsville.

Burial was at the Grant Township Cemetery.
