Charles A. Newman, 82, of Salix, died Saturday in a hospital in Onawa.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church in Southland. The Rev. Gary DeGeest officiated. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery, near Rodney. There was a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Newman was born July 12, 1901, in Monona County, near Mapleton, to Charles and Dora (Peacock) Newman; and was raised in the Ticonic area. He married Olive Burke December 20, 1924, in Sioux City. They farmed in the Anthon-Oto community, retiring 1968, ' and moving to Smithland. She died' December 28, 1976. He later lived in Mapleton for five years, moving to Salix two years ago.

Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, and three brothers.

Survivors include one son, James of Salix; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Kahabka of Burnsville, Minnesota, Mrs. Dean (Donna) Palser of Dodge City, Nebraska, and Mrs. Deane, (Jeanette) Kelsey of Smithland; two brothers, Leonard of Mapleton, and Leland of Battle Creek; one sister, Mrs. Orville (Beulah) Lucas of Smithland; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.
