Wilda Elizabeth Erickson, 91, of Castana died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Castana Community Church, with the Revs. Linda Boggs and Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Township Cemetery, Castana. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Wilda was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Castana, the daughter of William and Blanche (Struble) Aitken. She grew up in the Castana area, attending school in Monona County rural schools and graduating from Castana High School in 1938. She then attended Buena Vista College, where she received a normal teaching certificate. After graduation, Wilda taught in rural country schools including the Arcola community where they lived.

Wilda and Robert Erickson were united in marriage in Dakota City on Nov. 21, 1942, and lived in Sioux City for a short while. They returned to the Castana area in 1943, where Wilda assisted Robert in running the family farm and raising their four children.

Wilda greatly enjoyed helping out with farm work, sewing, cooking, and gardening. She and her sister, Wyma, shared a cake decorating business for a number of years. Wilda was a longtime member of the Castana Community Church and was an active member of Ladies Aid there. She belonged to the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Auxiliary Post 502 and was a 4-H leader for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Robert of Castana; three children, Barry (Marjorie) Erickson of Castana, Sheryl (Michael) Patten of Spencer, Iowa, and Bernie Erickson of Castana; eight grandchildren, Chad (Kristi) Johnson, Brent (Andrea) Johnson, Darin Johnson, Eric Johnson, Ericka Erickson, Aaron Erickson, Brandon (Corrie) Patten, and Devin Patten; and five great-grandchildren, Colton Johnson, Wyatt Johnson, Lynnae Johnson, Adeline Patten, and Charles Patten.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carma Johnson; her parents, William and Blanche Aitken; and five sisters, Juanita Reckoff, Winona Olson, Wanda Olson, Wyma Knoff, and Letty Hammer.
