MAPLETON, Iowa -- Chris Oberg, 20, of Mapleton died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, in Emerson, Neb., along with his girlfriend, Alexis Calfee.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Maple Valley-Anthon Oto School Gym in Mapleton, with the Rev. Scott Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton has been entrusted with the arrangements for Chris.

Christopher Ryan Oberg was born May 9, 1991, in Columbus, Neb., the son of Steve and Sue (Sextro) Oberg. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on July 14, 1991, and confirmed on May 7, 2006. When Chris was just 1 year old, the family moved to Mapleton, where he grew up and was educated in the Maple Valley-Anthon Oto School system, graduating with the class of 2010. While in school, Chris was an accelerated student demonstrating a high degree of athleticism. He was a letterman in four sports, football, baseball, basketball, and track, and ran at the state of Iowa track meet three years.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton and enjoyed his work for Midwest Land and Auction in town -- mostly due to his ability to buy $1 treasures to give to his friends. As soon as he could, at age 18, Chris became a volunteer fireman for the Mapleton Fire Department. He relished the position so much that he went on to train for certification as a level 1 firefighter. After making the choice to attend Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., he was solicited by the Wayne Fire Department to join their team, but declined due to his classes and being a member of the Wayne State College track team, where he was part of the 4 x 200 team that set an indoor record for the college. Chris had chosen political science and criminal justice as his majors and planned to complete law school. At the time of his death, he was a sophomore at Wayne State.

Chris never had a bad day. He was part of a very close and loving family, and especially enjoyed his big sis, Jaime. Always larger than life, he had a very quick wit, which enabled him to fire off classic Chris comebacks. He enjoyed hunting, was a Nebraska Huskers fan, and liked playing PS3 online with his friend Joey Flanigan. Over the summer, Chris, Sue, Steve, Jaime and Grandma and Grandpa Sextro were able to spend a week together on a cruise to Alaska. Of the many trips the family was able to take together over the years, it was one of Chris's favorites, and the memories of that trip will forever be cherished. Chris also enjoyed his time spent on Grandpa and Grandma Oberg's farm, where he loved to help Grandpa hunt and ride Grandpa's four-wheeler. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Those left to cherish their memories of Chris include his father and mother, Steve and Sue (Sextro) Oberg of Mapleton; his sister, Army Cadet Jaime Lynn Oberg of Storm Lake, Iowa; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Gloria (Blohm) Oberg of Wakefield, Neb.; his maternal grandparents, Dave and Anne (Allstot) Sextro of Albia, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Brenda, also godmother, (Tom) Nissen of Wayne, Sheri (Carl) Heilman of Great Bend, Kan., Beth (Mike) Namanny of Morton, Ill., Major Ryan, also godfather, (Melanie) Sextro of Urbandale, Iowa, and Sherry Johannsen (Joel) Porsch of Audubon, Iowa; cousins, Ben, Missy (Overholt) and Jake Nissen, Brooke, Ali, Scott and Max Heilman, Taylor and Logan Namanny, Ethan and Lincoln Sextro, and Ashley, Katie, and Kasey Porsch; great-aunts and uncles, Harold (and Pat) Oberg and Esther Oberg, all of Wakefield, Neb., Bob (and Karen) Blohm and Karen (and Ken) Anderson, all of Allen, Neb., Bill (and Karen) Allstot of Burlington Junction, Mo., Betty (and Larry) Kimmen of Dunlap, Iowa, Jim (and Kathie) Allstot of Lincoln, Neb., Shirley (and Larry) Robertson of Lake View, Iowa, Darlene (and Don) Hjuler of Audubon, Iowa, Pat (and Ron) Larsen of Peyton, Colo., Mary Schneider of Ankeny, Iowa, Phil (and Lois) Sextro of Grand Island, Neb., and Becky (and Bill) Rasmussen of Omaha; along with many good friends.

Chris was preceded in death by his great-aunts and uncles, Edna (Oberg) and Berneal Gustafson, Helen (Oberg) and Marvin Muller, Alvin Oberg, Paul Oberg, and Verna (Oberg) and Lorence Fischer; and great-grandparents, Pete N. and Hilma (Nelson) Oberg, Rudolph and Margaret (Lass) Blohm, Frank and Lorine (Eischeid) Sextro, and Cecil and Sally (Eckerman) Allstot.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Maple Valley School Foundation.
