SLOAN, Iowa -- Merrill Dean Wiggs, 83, Sloan, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at United Pentecostal Church of Onawa, with the Revs. Brian Kinney and Stephen Williams officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery at Turin, Iowa, with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force and Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post 295.

Merrill Dean Wiggs was born Aug. 18, 1928, at Turin, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Nellie (Quigley) Wiggs.

Merrill and Glenda Rae Kirk were united in marriage Aug. 2, 1950, in Onawa. He joined the United States Air Force in December 1950 and was honorably discharged in June 1952. He was a lifelong farmer in the Sloan area. Merrill also was employed at Horner Waldorf Box Co. before owning and operating the Gambles Store in Onawa for 10 years. He also was a bus driver for the Westwood Community School District for more than 20 years.

Merrill was a member of United Pentecostal Church of Onawa and Life Church of Sioux City and Smith-Rhode American Legion at Sloan. The couple enjoyed camping.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dennis and Susan Wiggs of Onawa and Douglas and Barbara Wiggs of Sloan; four grandchildren, Kirk (Tiffany) Wiggs of Sloan, Teresa (Steven) Murray of Onawa, Jason (Alison) Wiggs of Whiting and Rick (Jennifer) Wiggs of Whiting; 10 great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Murray, Ethan Wiggs, Brady Wiggs, Brooke Wiggs, Halle Murray, Jonah Wiggs, Collin Wiggs, Chloe Wiggs, Jake Wiggs and Keagan Wiggs; a brother, Mike Wiggs of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenda; his parents; and 11 sisters and brothers.
