8 July 1999Irene C. Petersen, age 83, of Ute, Iowa, died Monday, June 28, 1999, a t Mapleton. Iowa. Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with Rev. Scott Fiege officiating.
Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute. Lynette Thies was the organist for the service and St. Paul's Choir sang, "Just As I Am", "Abide With Me" and "Rock of Ages". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Armstrong Chapel in Ute.
Irene Caroline Petersen was born November 12, 1915 in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lena (Fester) Mordhorst. She graduated with the Ute High School Class of 1933. She furthered her education by graduating from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She then worked as a general and private Nurse in Sioux City.
On January 18. 1941 Irene was united in marriage to Johannes Petersen in Reno, Nevada. From 1941 to 1942 the couple lived in California where Irene worked at East Oakland Hospital. They then returned to Ute where she and her husband farmed until retiring in 1972 and moving into town. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute as well as a member of the Lutheran Alumni Association in Sioux City.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include Johannes , her husband of 58 years, along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herbert.
Honorary pallbearers were Norman Gosch, Herbert Neumann and David Christman.
Pallbearers were Jeff Mordhorst, Mike Mordhorst, Norman Petersen, Don Petersen, Byron
Christman and Joe Weed. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong
Funeral Home of Ute.
