1 September 1988George D. "Cheyenne" Thompson, age 66, of Mapleton, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 25. 1988, in a hospital at Onawa, Iowa.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 1988. at St. Matthew Lutheran
Church in Mapleton. Iowa, with the Reverend Les Kimball officiating.Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton, Iowa. Military graveside rites were by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, .August 28, 1988. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton. Iowa.
Mr. Thompson was born on May 30. 1922, at Charter Oak, Iowa, to George and Alice (Jenkins) Thompson. He graduated from the Charter Oak High School in 1940. He received his Normal Training Certificate in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 1, 1940. He taught school near Ricketts, Iowa. He married Madeline Mesenbrink on February 12, 1942, at Maryville. Missouri. He served in the Army-Air Force during World War II. In 1948, the couple moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he was a professional musician. He played for the Lloyd Thompson and Sons of Sage band and also on radio for seven years. He moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1971. He worked as a custodian at the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Due to poor health in 1981. He moved to rural Mapleton, Iowa.
He married Marlyn Anderson on June 23, 1984, at Mapleton. Iowa, at which time he moved into Mapleton, Iowa. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and a past member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Gloria Jean; one brother, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife: a daughter, Mrs. Bert (Marjorle) Oimig of Charter Oak, Iowa; a step-daughter, Teresa of Sioux City, Iowa; four step-sons, Chuck and Tim, both of Waterloo, Iowa, Jim of Mapleton, Iowa, and Brian of Onawa, Iowa; a sister. Gladys Kelm of Ottumwa; four grandchildren: and a great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Danny Dimig. Darren Dimig, Mike Rix, Roger Rix, James Broderson. Sr.,
and James Broderson, Jr.
