May 21, 2012UTE, Iowa | Sheryl M. Petersen, 75, of Ute passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, with the Rev. Gordon Buchholz officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute. Online condolences can be made at armstrongfuneral.com.
Sheryl M. Petersen was born on Aug. 7, 1936, the daughter of Roy and Florence (Carlson) Jones. She lived on a farm north of Charter Oak, Iowa, until 1946. At the age of four, she was stricken with polio. At age 10, she moved to Ute, where her father was employed by the Sander Plumbing, Heating & Hardware Store. She attended the Ute Public School, where she was active playing the clarinet in the band, school newspaper, 4H and Monona County Fairs. Sheryl graduated from Ute High School in 1955. After graduation, she attended the National Business Training College in Sioux City.
Don and Sheryl met in 1953 while still in high school. They were married March 25, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute. They made their home in Denison, Iowa, where Don was employed at the First National Bank and Sheryl was a bookkeeper at the Hested Lee Dime Store. In 1958 they moved to Ute. In 1959, Don served six months with the National Guard, four months of which they lived in Seaside, Calif. They returned to Ute in October of that year. In 1973 they built their present home on the north side of Ute, where they raised their two children, Troy, born Oct. 26, 1965, and Sheri, born Aug. 1, 1969.
Sheryl had been an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, reading and being a homemaker. Sheryl was known in her family for the Christmas candles and her chocolate chip cookies she made.
She is survived by her husband, Don Petersen; two children, Troy and wife, Deanna Petersen of Creston, Iowa, and Sheri Amsberry of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren, Kayla, Dorian and Devon Petersen and Tyler, Mara and Kyle Amsberry; one sister, Janelle and Joe Segari of Warsaw, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Floyd and Harriet Fretz of Orange City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Edna Jones of Des Moines, Iowa; an aunt, Lois Adams of Denison Care; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, JoAnn Fretz; and a brother, Donald Jones.
