24 may 2012WHITING, Iowa | Randal Lynn Haveman, 57, of Whiting passed away May 21, 2012 near Sloan, Iowa, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Avoca, Neb., with the Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Neb. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating, at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
Randy was born on Aug. 9, 1954, in Syracuse, Neb., the son of LeRoy and Joan (Noerrlinger) Haveman. He was raised on the family farm in Avoca, and was baptized, confirmed, and a member of the First Lutheran Church in Avoca. He graduated from Weeping Water High School in 1972, then began farming with his dad and brother following graduation.
Randy and Karolyn Kay Booth were united in marriage on Feb. 17, 1979, and moved with their sons, Bill and Dave to Homer, Neb., to farm in partnership with his brother, Larry, and sister-in-law, Karen. In 1981, they moved their farming operation to Iowa, where they have continued to farm in the Whiting area with nephews, Lee and Craig.
Randy loved farming. You could always find him working on something in the shop or checking the fields. He would never pass up the chance for a game of cards or to go fishing with friends. He also loved spending time with family and friends, and his greatest joys were his granddaughters, his nieces and nephews, his great-grandson and his grandnieces and nephews whom he loved to tease.
Randy is survived by his wife, Kay Haveman; a son, Bill (Tammy) Swoboda of Homer, Neb.; two granddaughters, Amber (Eric) Tompkins of Carroll, Iowa, and Amie (Tony) Pleskac of Wahoo, Neb.; a great-grandson, Kelby Tompkins; a brother, Larry (Karen) Haveman of Sloan, Iowa; three sisters, Shirley (Gary) Bornemeier of Elmwood, Neb., Denise (Bob) Fischer of Elmwood, and Julie Backemeyer of Greenwood, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Booth and friend, Pat Carlson of Kansas City, Mo.; a mother-in-law, Betty Booth of Whiting; special nephews, Lee (Lisa) Haveman and children, Lawson and Lanie of Sloan, and Craig Haveman of Whiting; a special niece, Erin Haveman and daughter, Lela of Sloan; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; a host of other relatives; and many good friends and neighbors who remember him as “Prairie Dog.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Swoboda; his father-in-law, Gale Booth; and his brother-in-law, Steve Backemeyer.
