ELLA WENDT
Ella Wendt, daughter of William and Christina (Plagge) Engelke, was born Aug. 2, 1907, in St. Clair Township, Monona County, Ia. She grew up on a farm near Ute. She married William Wendt Dec. 15, 1915, at the Lutheran parsonage in Ute. The couple farmed near Mapleton until 1948, when they retired and moved into Mapleton. Mr. Wendt died April 15, 1975. In 1977 she moved to Maple Crest Apartments. She entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in November of 1992.
Mrs. Wendt was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton and the Lois Circle of the Lutheran Church Women. She was a past member of the Ladies Aid of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute.
Survivors include a son and his wife, George and Mahela of Ricketts; two daughters, Mildred Brummer of Denison and Lucille “Lu” Grefe of South Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a stillborn son; a daughter, Eleanor; five brothers and two sisters.
Ella passed away on Jan. 19, 1993, in Denison, Iowa at the age of 95 years, five months and 17 days.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Charles Adams officiating. Music was congregational singing of “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Nearer My God To Thee” with Norma Jean Dose as organist.
Pallbearers were David Grefe, Vincent V. Brummer, Gary Wendt, Dana Grefe, Dennis Brummer and Richard Wendt.
A prayer service was held Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Walter-Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton. Interment was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier Township.
The Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
