Bernard Leo Hupke was born September 28, 1903 at Danbury, Iowa and died Saturday August 20 at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness at the age of 56.

Mr. Hupke had lived all his life in the Danbury area. He married Lucille Rauterkus January 28, 1930 at Mapleton. He served in the Marine Corps from 1924 to 1928.

He was the owner and manager of Hupke Electric in Mapleton and fire marshal from 1949 to 1959.

Mr. Hupke was a member of the Mapleton Community club; St Mary’s Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name society.

Survivors include the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Richard Gretch of Glendive, Mont., Mrs. Richard Weber of Danbury and Mrs. Richard Jones of Altoona, Iowa, two sons, Leon of Mapleton and Robert of Sioux City; five sisters, Mrs. John Theobald of Mapleton, Mrs. John Kline of Danbury, Mrs. Anton Flammang, Mrs. Jerome Uhl all of Ontario, California, three brothers, Joseph and Frank of Mapleton and John of Norfolk, Nebr. and ten grandchildren.

Services were held August 23 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. A H. Ocken officiating. Honary pallbearers were members of the fire department and included: Lawrence Otto, Delbert Uhl, Maurice Kueny, Clifford LeFebvre, Robert Tripp and Clifton Clark. The Maple ton firemen and the Knights of Columbus were the honor guard.

Active pallbearers were: Delbert Hupke, Lester Hupke, Carl Mohrhauser, Harlan Theobald, Donald Theobald and Omer Kline. Burial was at St. Mary’s cemetery under the direction of the Walter Funeral Homes.
