John Frese
John Frese passed away at the Onawa hospital on Tuesday, February 13th after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Frese had made his home with his step-daughter, Mrs. Loren Means of Castana for the past year. He was born May 29, 1867 at Hanover, Germany and came to America when he was about 15 years of age, coming to Illinois and later about 1895 coming on to Monona County where he settled near Ticonic. He had been a resident of the Ticonic community for the past 55 years until moving to Castana. For many years he farmed and in later years acted as janitor of the Ticonic church and worked at various jobs in that community.

He was a kind and friendly man and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by Mrs. Loren Means with whom he made his home and four other stepchildren, Mrs. Bruce Pringe, Adel, Iowa: Mrs. Mary Piekstick, Mendota, Ill: Fred Hodges, Brainard, Minn.: and Henry Rodges of Oskaloost, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Ticonic Methodist church on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carroll Hallbert of Castana officiating. Svan Davies gave comfort in song accompanied by Mrs. Hensen Davies. Interment was in the Grant Cemetery in care of the Pearson Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 21, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. in the Castana Community Church, Castana, Iowa, with Pastor Patricia Preuss officiating. Patsy Petersen, organist, played “How Great Thou Art”. “The Old Rugged Cross”, “In The Garden” and “Abide With Me” for the message in music.

Pallbearers were Harvey Hanson, Sam Mann, Harlan Morgan, Russell Davis, Richard Davis Sr., Gilbert Gotto. Interment was in Center Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Arrangements were by the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Services, Mapleton, Iowa.
