WALTER CONGER

Walter was born on December 13, 1913, to Fred and Leoda Sinjen Conger. Walter died on November 5, 2000, in Mapleton, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 22 days. He was raised in the Schleswig area. He served in WWII with the 54th Signal Batallion from 1941-1945. He married Betty Moen at Spearfish, South Dakota, on August 20, 1959. He farmed near Mapleton until his retirement in 1980.

He enjoyed gardening and beekeeping and attended several reunions of the 54th Signal Batallion.

He was a member of the VFW in Schleswig.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Betty, of Mapleton; one son, Jeff Conger of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; a brother, Herbert Conger and his wife, Ann, of Denison and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hobert, and a step-daughter, Sue Albers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 8, 2000, at 3 p.m. at the Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton, Iowa, with Pastor Bob Fritzmeier officiating the service and grave side rites held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Sharon Kruse served as organist for the congregational hymns, “In The Sweet By and By” and “Peace in the Valley.” Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.
